The tide is starting to turn. Figures released last month showed that retail prices actually fell by a few percent on a year ago. Food, clothing, electrical goods, footwear and sports equipment were just a few of the categories to see a drop in prices.

Much as we'd like to claim the credit for this improved state of affairs, I think we need to look at the broader picture to see the real reasons.

Over the last 12 months, considerable media attention has been focused on comparative pricing. People are now much more aware of what consumers in other other countries pay for products and services.

The "rip-off Britain" slogan is a very powerful one, and it's put retailers under close scrutiny and heavy pressure. At the same time, new retail concepts have flourished, providing the disgruntled consumer with alternative ways to get better value for money.

Low cost airlines are bringing down the cost of international travel. And of course, the Internet, is breaking down international barriers, spreading price awareness and giving consumers the opportunity to get together to drive down prices - and in some cases, even name their own prices - Tesco Extra Pool!

The rules of the game are changing, and they're changing in favour of the consumer. More information and more choices lead to lower prices in general, and that's what we're seeing now. Take Tesco for example. Responding to the public's demand for cheaper goods & products. Have seen their profits jumped (so to speak) sky high!.

That's the good news. The bad news is that we've still got a long way to go. Although price differentials have narrowed, we're still paying significantly higher prices than elsewhere in Europe and the United States.

Anyone who's recently taken a trip across the channel to France, or taken a holiday in the USA, will be only too aware that we're still being taken for a ride.

This is never more apparent than in the car market, where most manufacturers are stubbornly sticking to their artificially created differentials. Their days are numbered!

The next 12 months look set to be even better for consumers. The changes I've talked about here are still gathering pace. Any retailer which ignores them, does so at their peril. They will not survive.
