Application Integration Moves Into Gear
A new concept to Application Integration could bring about a major shift in the EAI software
and application server markets.
Application Integration - ESB (Enterprise service bus) software, which uses messaging to transport data
between connected applications, is rapidly gaining acceptance among enterprises
because it provides a low-cost way of overcoming many interoperability problems.
Application Integration - the Enterprise service bus avoids a spaghetti of company application interconnections
because existing applications, services and other data sources need only to plug into
the bus to communicate. It is expected that most companies will run an ESB in the next
few years to come.
This Application Integration ESB approach is seen by analysts as a potential threat to EAI companies through
its low cost and flexibility. It is also a threat to application server vendors, partly
because an application server's hub-and-spoke architecture is a bottleneck for high data
volumes and a single point of failure.
The arrival of web services had encouraged companies to look at their strategies afresh.
Even though, it doesn't weaken the case for web services but with an Application Integration ESB it really is
irrelevant what type of connection is used. Flexibility is the key!
Enterprises will not remove large systems. Application Integration ESB is seen as being increasingly adopted
for new developments precisely because it can be installed without disrupting existing
applications and ways of working.
Application Integration ESB needs to be standards-based for interoperability and future proofing, and the
only choice to emerge for messaging so far is the J2EE messaging standard (JMS)(J2EE
is Java 2 Enterprise Editions).
With this an Application Integration ESB adds facilities such as routing and data transformation plus a set
of standards-based connectors such as web services and Java Connector Architecture (JCA),
along with other connectors for specific applications.
Who Is Benefiting with Application Integration ESB?
One company benefiting from the shift to ESB is Progress Software's message-oriented
middleware (MOM) subsidiary, Sonic Software. Sonic Software's JMS-based SonicMQ MOM has
built its market share to over 500 global enterprise users, which it puts down to
high performance and standards-compliance.
Also, Forte Software has set up a new buiness unit to focus on the Application Integration market and has
introduced the first in a family of new EAI products. Customers need to integrate their
operational systems to create a new style of customer applications. Applications can't
be built without integration - the two are inextricably linked, and Gartner says that
70 per cent of its Forte related calls are concerning customer integration projects.
In addition, Oracle is developing a Message Broker based on Sun's Java Message Service (JMS)
specification. Message Broker will provide existing applications with workflow capabilities
and enable disparate packages, including its own ERP applications bundles, to communicate
with each other.
One of the database supplier's key current themes is Application Integration, which it sees as an
important role of the new version of its Application Server.
Application Integration Always An After-Thought!
Business managers are not listening to network and IT managers about the importance of Application Integration.
Recent research, commissioned jointly by Network News' parent company, VNU, and Microsoft
Enterprise Services reveal that any integration that does happen is usually no more than
an after-thought.
Application Integration always gets put last, and there are always 'snipers' - different business requirements
that mean we have to drop projects. Integration is always the one that takes the hit.
Application Integration covers the plans, methods and tools for modernising and consolidating applications in a
business. Most modern companies need to combine legacy systems with new, web-based applications.
Because business managers overlook the potential of EAI, it is often carried out in-house. This
opens up a can of worms on standards and could mean expensive future integration problems.
